Qigong – The Bird Form

I love this qigong form, perfect for the Autumn.

The first forms of Qigong were practiced by the ancient shamans and sages of the Himalayas.  These sages lived close to the earth in a way that was connected to nature’s cycles, These early Qigong forms began as animal dances, mimicking movements of animals, honouring their connection to the earth and to life.

The bird form is one of these. This form is designed to work on our Internal Organs specifically the Lungs & Large Intestine.  – working with our emotion of Sadness.

For me, the bird form is about opening the lungs, opening our breath, increasing our lung capacity, and at the same time connecting the lung energy to our hearts.

We use stretching & balancing movements and our breath, to strengthen the function of our lungs, enabling our blood to move ‘qi’ more effectively around our body, calming our thoughts and emotions.

In Chinese medicine the lungs are said to house our grief and sadness and this form is said to help transform our grief into joy. The form begins with warming up and opening our wings, as we do this we are opening our lungs, were creating space in the body for our Qi to flow. When we begin to fly we begin to move the heavy energy or emotions of the lungs into the heart to be transformed, as we fly the centre of the chest opens and lifts, we begin to open the heart space. The movement helps to clear away any heaviness, any stuckness, clearing, refreshing and cleaning the lung Qi and lifting the heart.

We are able to transform our heavy emotions and bring in more lightness, making more space for joy, making space for the capacity of the heart to expand and to accept everything that’s going on in our lives.

This form has a light, energising, uplifting quality giving us a taste of freedom, freedom to fly free, free as a bird!

If you’d like to have a play with the bird form there are still a couple of places left on Sundays Retreat day where will be practicing this form and others to support us as we move into winter.

The way of love

is not a subtle argument.

The door there

is devastation.

Birds make great sky-circles

of their freedom.

How do they learn it?

They fall, and falling,

they’re given wings.
